Electrification of remote villages (mostly tribal hamlets) was taken up by ANERT right from the late '80s and early '90s. Initially it was implemented using solar lanterns, solar street lights, TV power packs and home lighting systems. From 2000 onwards ANERT attempted electrification using standalone solar power plants that powered the entire hamlet. This programme was later taken up by MNES, Govt of India, at the national level, as the Rural Village Electrification Proramme (RVEP).
