Kerala is leading the development of a Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster, an initiative aimed at promoting energy transition and decarbonisation within the state. Kerala stands out as the only state in India to develop a comprehensive Valley that includes the entire hydrogen value chain—from production and storage to distribution and diverse end-use applications and R&D. This includes biogenic and electrolysis-based hydrogen production and the use of hydrogen in water and road transport. Initially, these projects will be developed on a pilot basis, and once commercially proven, they will be scaled up over the next phase. ANERT was shortlisted by a Government of India programme, for preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for the Valley. The DPR for the pilot phase, with ANERT as lead partner and a number of partners from the public and private sector including industry, academic and research institutions, has estimated a project cost of ₹133 crore. Funding from the programme is expected for the pilot projects to the tune of ₹53 crore with the remaining met by the state and partner institutions. This ambitious project will position the state as an early supplier of green ammonia and hydrogen to global markets. The project has been recommended for financial support and final decision is awaited. A section 8 company needs to be formed by the lead partner for this project and the final approval for formation of company is awaited from Government of Kerala.
